What it does
AAF → EDL reads a binary AAF locally in your browser, follows supported source references to their timecodes, and creates one EDL for each selected nonempty video track. A multitrack EDL bundle includes a track-map JSON. The import retains original track numbers, source ranges, record positions and gaps. Audio is retained by default. Unsupported audio is reported and blocks export.
When and why to use it
Use this when editorial supplies an AAF and the next task needs a compact video edit list: source-range checks, reel cleanup, scanning, grading or conform. You can inspect recognized cuts and use the existing edit-list tools before exporting. The original AAF is never modified.
A practical example
A sequence contains cuts on V1 and V3, with V2 empty. Select V1 and V3 to download Film_V1.edl and Film_V3.edl together. The V3 inserts retain their original record positions; the track is not renumbered or rippled.
Choose a conversion for your input
The menu groups conversions by the open file’s format: EDL, XML or AAF. Only conversions from that format are enabled. FCP7 XML and FCPXML both use the XML group, with their individual support limits still checked at export. Gray options explain which input to open; guide pages remain available for every direction. Choosing an output or downloading a conversion does not replace the working document. Open the exported file to start working in its new format.
How to use it
- Open an AAF or choose the AAF sample. The reader loads on first use; your file is not uploaded.
- If the AAF contains several compositions, choose the intended sequence. If a continuous sequence timecode is missing, confirm its start and DF/NDF mode from your edit.
- Review the import summary and source/record timecodes. Use the active-track selector to inspect other video tracks.
- Choose AAF → EDL, select nonempty tracks, then Preview EDLs and download the result.
What to check before a handoff
This first version supports hard cuts and filler at a uniform supported rate. Effects, transitions, selectors, nesting, pulldown, unresolved source timecodes, non-zero slot origins, mixed source/sequence DF modes and half-rate timecode tracks block export. The table may show only recognized cuts when import findings exist. Included tracks with findings block conversion. Explicitly excluding an affected track can permit a handoff of the remaining supported tracks; no track is omitted automatically. Audio-only AAF can be inspected when a supported sequence timecode rate is present. Embedded media is not extracted. Limits: 64 MB, 64 video tracks, 5,000 recognized video events. Source reel names are not silently truncated to eight characters. XML → AAF creates a new offline AAF with supported video and mono audio edits; rewriting arbitrary imported AAF structures is not supported.
