Telecine and film scanning: EDL reels and timecodes

What an EDL can tell a scanning operator

An EDL identifies edited source ranges and their record positions. For film work, it can help organize which transfer reels appear in a cut and where the used material sits in those transfers. That is useful preparation for a telecine, scanning or reconform discussion.

However, video timecode and a physical film identifier are different things. Keycode or edge-number correspondence requires the production’s transfer logs and the facility’s workflow. An EDL alone cannot recover missing film-to-video mapping. Confirm whether the facility wants a source-sorted list, a record-order list, a cut list or another format.

Agree reel identifiers before renaming them

Ask how the scan facility identifies each roll or transfer. A camera reel, lab roll and file basename may not be interchangeable. Keep an explicit mapping between the original label and any replacement used in the handoff.

Reels & Usage can rename matching EDL reels across tracks. Split & Merge can separate the list by reel, and Sort & Renumber can order the events by source address for review. Sorting changes the order of entries, not their record positions; keep a record-order copy when the recipient needs to reconstruct the edit.

Example: repeated source usage is not unique footage

Suppose one roll has a cut using source frames 100–200 and another using 150–250, with exclusive out-points. Their event durations sum to 200 frames, but their union contains 150 unique frames. EDL Toolbox’s usage report sums the event durations. It does not merge those ranges into a unique scanning requirement.

Likewise, earliest Source In and latest Source Out describe outer bounds, not every frame that must be scanned. A large unused section can fall between two short shots. Give the facility the individual ranges and agree how to handle overlaps and handles.

Offsets, frame rates and pulldown

A known fixed difference between an original transfer and a replacement scan may be represented by a source timecode offset. Verify that relationship on the first, middle and last selected shot. If the discrepancy changes through the roll, investigate rate, cadence, missing frames or the mapping rather than applying a larger fixed offset.

DF/NDF changes label numbering; it does not remove a telecine cadence. Changing edit-list FPS is not inverse telecine or media retiming. Pulldown relationships and physical film keycode conversion are outside this toolbox’s supported operations.

Build a clear handoff package

  1. Retain the original EDL and the corresponding reference movie.
  2. Confirm transfer rate, timecode convention, reel naming and source origins.
  3. Validate the list and review any requested reel or source-offset corrections.
  4. Export separate reel lists or a usage CSV when the facility asks for them.
  5. Supply transfer logs, frame/edge-number mapping and handle requirements separately.
  6. Check a representative scan against the edit before committing to the full job.

The CSV describes the active track, while reel renaming and splitting can involve multiple tracks. Select and review the intended track before treating a report as a summary of the whole production. EDL Toolbox does not add scan handles automatically or control scanning equipment.
