What it does
AAF → XML exports the selected video tracks as one FCP7 XML (xmeml) sequence. It preserves hard cuts, original track numbers, gaps, available source names, source media offsets and record timecodes. A selected V3 remains the third video track, with preceding empty tracks represented in the XML.
When and why to use it
Use it to inspect and transfer simple AAF video edits into a workflow that accepts FCP7 XML. The shared event table lets you review the edit before creating another interchange file.
A practical example
Import the Coastline AAF sample, choose V1 and V3, and preview the XML. It contains three track positions with V2 empty. The clip in-points remain relative to the referenced media start rather than being reset to zero.
Choose a conversion for your input
The menu groups conversions by the open file’s format: EDL, XML or AAF. Only conversions from that format are enabled. FCP7 XML and FCPXML both use the XML group, with their individual support limits still checked at export. Gray options explain which input to open; guide pages remain available for every direction. Choosing an output or downloading a conversion does not replace the working document. Open the exported file to start working in its new format.
How to use it
- Open the AAF and select a sequence if prompted. Resolve any import findings before conversion.
- Choose AAF → XML and select the nonempty video and audio tracks to include.
- Set the output filename and whether to preserve clip names, then preview the XML.
- Download the XML, import it into your receiving application, relink external media and check against reference picture.
What to check before a handoff
Output is FCP7 XML, not a full-fidelity project transfer or a multitrack FCPXML export. The initial sequence format is 1920 × 1080. Supported mono audio edits are retained. Unsupported audio, effects and AAF structures block conversion. Embedded media is not extracted. Missing external media may require relinking. Synthetic fixtures verify timing; representative exports from your own NLE still need a real conform check. Use XML → AAF for the reverse direction within its documented interchange subset.
