What it does
EDL → XML defaults to all imported video and audio tracks. The export-track checkboxes explicitly choose which tracks to include; changing the active table track does not change the export selection. FCP7 XML supports basic audio cuts. FCPXML export is blocked while audio is included. It preserves supported cut timing, source frame addresses, absolute record positions, sequence start and gaps. Choose FCP7 XML (xmeml) or FCPXML, which are different interchange formats.
When and why to use it
Use XML when the receiving editing application needs a sequence structure rather than a plain edit list. It can provide a starting point for a conform while keeping the EDL’s timing information visible and reviewable.
A practical example
A 29.97 DF EDL begins at 01:00:00;00 and contains a gap before its third cut. The exported sequence retains that start and gap. The original EDL comments are carried as text metadata.
Choose a conversion for your input
The menu groups conversions by the open file’s format: EDL, XML or AAF. Only conversions from that format are enabled. FCP7 XML and FCPXML both use the XML group, with their individual support limits still checked at export. Gray options explain which input to open; guide pages remain available for every direction. Choosing an output or downloading a conversion does not replace the working document. Open the exported file to start working in its new format.
How to use it
- Confirm the file’s playback rate and DF/NDF mode.
- Choose the XML dialect, export tracks and output filename. Audio tracks start selected.
- Preview the XML, export it and relink media in the receiving application as needed.
What to check before a handoff
EDL contains no media. Generated XML uses a 1920 × 1080 sequence format, and offline assets may need relinking. Transitions, speed effects and detected unsupported structures are blocked. CDL comments are preserved as metadata; grading effects are not applied. Test the receiving application’s high-frame-rate timecode conventions.
Reference & format notes
These guides describe the current EDL Toolbox behavior. For XML format details, see Apple’s FCP7 XML reference and FCPXML documentation. Test the exported list against representative media in your receiving application.
